Melatonin dosage for children
Also sold as melatonin gummies, Zarbee’s Kids Sleep, melatonin drops
There is no standard melatonin dose by weight for children. A 2024 clinical review reports that doses of 0.5 to 5 mg, given 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime, have been proposed for healthy children, and that product labels typically suggest no more than 1 mg for ages 3 to 5, 2 mg for ages 6 to 12, and 3 mg from age 12. Melatonin is sold as a dietary supplement, so it isn’t regulated like a medicine, and tested gummies have held far more or less than their labels say. Talk to your pediatrician before starting it.

Why there’s no weight chart
Weight-based dose tables exist for medicines like acetaminophen because they were built from dosing studies. Melatonin hasn’t been studied that way in healthy children, and it’s sold as a dietary supplement, so doses aren’t standardized. Pages that offer a “melatonin dose by weight” are inventing one. Your pediatrician will usually start low and adjust.
What’s in the bottle
The review cites testing in which melatonin content varied from 83% less to 478% more than the label claimed, with the widest variation in chewable products. Buy from a brand that uses third-party testing, and keep gummies out of reach: they look and taste like candy.
Accidental overdoses are rising
The same review reports a 530% increase over ten years in accidental melatonin ingestions by children under 5. Most children (82.8%) had no symptoms, but some needed hospital care. If your child eats more than they should, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Before you try melatonin
- Start with sleep habits: a regular bedtime, a dark, quiet room, and no screens in the hour before bed.
- Ask your pediatrician first, especially for a child under 3, or a child with a medical condition or on other medicines.
- Give it 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime, and use the lowest amount that works.
Common questions
How much melatonin can I give my 2-year-old?
Ask your pediatrician first. The review notes that products are generally labeled for use starting at 2, 3 or 4 years, and there’s no standard dose for toddlers.
Is 1 mg of melatonin too much for a 3-year-old?
Product labels reported in the review suggest not more than 1 mg for ages 3 to 5. Your pediatrician may suggest less.
Can kids take melatonin every night?
Long-term nightly use in healthy children hasn’t been well studied. Talk to your pediatrician about how long to use it.
