Benadryl for babies and toddlers under 2
The Children’s Benadryl label says do not use it in children under 2 years, and to use it for ages 2 to 5 only if a doctor directs. Pediatricians sometimes do recommend diphenhydramine for a younger child, but only for a specific reason and at a dose they set. Never give it to make a baby sleep.

Why the label says no under 2
- Drowsiness can be marked, and in young children it can affect breathing.
- The label warns that excitability may occur, especially in children: some babies become agitated rather than sleepy.
- Diphenhydramine appears in other products, including anti-itch creams. The label says not to use it with any other product containing diphenhydramine, even one used on skin.
If your pediatrician recommends it
Ask for the exact dose in mL and how often to give it, and write it down. St. Louis Children’s dose table starts at 20 lb (4 mL of 12.5 mg/5 mL liquid) for children whose doctor has told them to use it. Our Benadryl calculator won’t show a dose under 2 years, because the package says not to.
What to do for allergy symptoms in a baby
- Call 911 for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, repeated vomiting after a food, or if your baby seems faint or floppy.
- Call your pediatrician for hives, a new rash, or itching in a baby under 2.
- For seasonal allergy symptoms in older children, the once-daily antihistamines (Zyrtec, Claritin) are approved from age 2.

Can I give my 1-year-old Benadryl?
Only if your child’s doctor tells you to. The Children’s Benadryl label says do not use under 2 years.
Can I give Benadryl to help my baby sleep, for a flight or a car ride?
No. The label specifically says not to use it to make a child sleepy, and some children become agitated instead.
What can I give a baby for an allergic reaction?
